Cryotherapy Chambers for Athletes: Faster Recovery Between Hard Sessions

by Linner Official on Sep 23, 2026

Cryotherapy has become a regular part of training for fighters, wrestlers, runners and team athletes. Coaches book sessions after hard sparring, between two workouts on the same day and during competition week. The goal is practical: less soreness tomorrow, so the next session can go ahead at full intensity.

Most sports facilities now use cryotherapy chambers instead of ice baths. A session lasts two to three minutes in dry air between −110 °C and −160 °C, and athletes can go in one after another without waiting for a tub to be refilled and chilled. For a squad of twenty, that saves hours every week.

Why Athletes Choose Cryotherapy Over Ice Baths

Ice baths work, and many athletes still use them. The problem is the routine around them. A proper cold water session takes ten to fifteen minutes, handles one person at a time and is hard to face after an exhausting day, so athletes start skipping it. A cryotherapy session is shorter, drier and much easier to tolerate. Players who avoid the tub will happily step into the cabin, and recovery only works when people actually do it.

How Cryotherapy Helps Recovery

During the Cryotherapy Session

The skin cools quickly, blood vessels near the surface narrow and blood moves toward the core. Athletes feel a sharp tingling across the legs and shoulders, and the timer on the wall keeps the three minutes short.

After the Cryotherapy Session

When the door opens, blood flows back into the muscles and joints. Athletes describe lighter legs, less next-day soreness and a strong lift in energy and focus. Many clubs now choose an electric cryotherapy chamber, which runs on power alone, needs no nitrogen deliveries and keeps the air fully breathable.

Back-to-back sessions of two to three minutes let a whole squad recover in the time one ice bath takes.

When to Use Cryotherapy in a Training Week

Coaches who use cold well plan it around the training load. These are the most common slots:

  • After hard sparring, live wrestling or a match. The classic use, so the next day is still productive.

  • Between two sessions on the same day. A short midday session helps athletes feel fresh for the evening block.

  • Competition week. Frequent short sessions when the load drops and the focus shifts to feeling sharp and sleeping well.

  • Strength phases. Coaches leave a few hours between heavy lifting and the cold session to keep the benefits of both.

How Often Should Athletes Use Cryotherapy?

Most sports clubs start with two or three sessions a week and add extra ones during heavy blocks or tournaments. Some athletes go daily for short periods before a competition. Regular short sessions give better results than an occasional visit, so it pays to make cryotherapy part of the weekly plan rather than something athletes do only when they feel sore.

Cryotherapy Chambers for Clubs and Teams: What to Look For

A chamber in a busy club runs from early morning to late evening, so reliability matters as much as temperature. A whole body cryotherapy chamber with the head inside the cold zone gives every athlete an even, complete session. When comparing models, check these points:

  • the same temperature on the last session of the day as on the first

  • short recovery time between athletes

  • an emergency stop inside the cabin, a door that opens easily from within and a visible timer

  • installation, staff training and fast service in your region

Simple touch control and a visible timer make it easy for staff to run sessions all day.

Is Cryotherapy Safe for Athletes?

Healthy athletes tolerate sessions well when staff supervise and the skin is dry. Anyone with heart or blood pressure problems should check with a doctor before starting.

Cryotherapy Chambers as Part of a Winning Routine

Cryotherapy will not replace good sleep, smart programming and proper food. It gives athletes a fast, easy way to recover that fits into the busiest training week, and that is why more clubs add a chamber every season.

VacuActivus, the company behind the Cryonick line, has built cryotherapy equipment since 2000 and supplies sports teams, clinics and recovery studios in more than 50 countries.
